Energy Law

Energy and Natural Resources

Energy is one of the key drivers of the economy and is vital for virtually every process of our society. Energy played an important role in the development of the Dutch Caribbean islands, with the operation of oil refineries on the islands of Aruba and Curaçao. There are also oil transshipment facilities on the islands of Aruba, Bonaire, Curaçao and St Eustatius. Until recently electricity was mostly generated by means of turbines consuming heavy fuel on the Dutch Caribbean islands. The Islands have, however, been pushing for green and sustainable energy, erecting numerous wind and solar parks. The various islands have also been looking at other alternative sources, such as tidal energy and deep seawater cooling. The Government of Aruba has teamed up with Carbon War Room and has announced the ambitious goal to become carbon neutral by the year 2020.

AMDC Law lawyers are knowledgeable in energy law and regulatory matters and assist clients with drafting and the negotiation of power purchase agreements, public private partnership arrangements and with establishing sustainable energy companies on the various Dutch Caribbean islands. An AMDC Law attorney recently successfully assisted a multinational company with a production sharing contract for the exploration and production of amongst others natural gas in the territorial waters of Aruba and the subsequent establishment in Aruba.
